Enhancing Bicycle Safety:
Law Enforcement's Role
Section Six: Crash Investigation and Reporting
Crash Reporting and Investigation
The Crash Report - Why
- Most States do not require crash reports if the event does not happen on a public road or involve a motor vehicle. These restrictions exclude the vast majority of bicyclist crashes from mandatory reporting.
- Even if the crash report is not required by the State, completing a crash report helps your State and community determine problem areas, and will assist them in their efforts to enhance traffic safety for all road users (motorists and cyclists).
- By documenting the bicycle involved in a crash as a “vehicle” on the crash report, a better understanding of the nature of the crash and how it occurred is more easily tracked to determine crash trends and possible countermeasures.
- Your reporting could be critical to the cyclist and their family for complete and accurate insurance claims.
