Contrary to popular belief, sidewalk riding is generally less safe than using the roadway for the following reasons:
- Sidewalks are not designed for vehicles.
- There is a risk of collision with a pedestrian.
- Sidewalk cyclists are at a high risk for crashes at intersections and driveways because they are approaching from an unexpected position, and at several times the speed of a pedestrian.
